Kicillof to Lead Buenos Aires PJ as Kirchnerism Enters New Era

Buenos Aires province is holding internal elections for the Justicialist Party (PJ). Governor Axel Kicillof will head the unified list, replacing Máximo Kirchner. This occurs amid signs of weakening influence from Cristina Kirchner ahead of the 2027 presidential elections.

Governor Axel Kicillof stated the need to “expand affiliations, training, political preparation, and technical cadres with a federal perspective.” The internal elections, where Kicillof's lists will face off against those of the 'Right to the Future' movement he leads, will be held in 18 municipalities, including Tres de Febrero, San Miguel, Morón, and others. The leadership structure of the Buenos Aires chapter of the Justicialist Party (PJ) will consist of Vice Governor Verónica Magario and the mayor of Lomas de Zamora, Federico Otermín, as vice presidents, while Mariano Cascallares will serve as General Secretary. Máximo Kirchner will head the party congress, and the mayor of Malvinas Argentinas, Leonardo Nardini, will continue to lead the party's electoral board, according to party sources. Following the PJ elections in Buenos Aires, there is still no clarity on how the single list for the party council will be proclaimed, nor if there will be an event with Kicillof for him to formally assume the provincial presidency. However, two events in Buenos Aires are already planned to consolidate the 'Right to the Future' movement with an eye on the 2027 presidential elections. Despite a unified list in most of the province's 135 municipalities, the internal rift between Kicillof and La Cámpora is not settled. Recently, another exchange occurred between provincial official Carlos Bianco, the governor's right-hand man, and the Kirchnerist deputy Mayra Mendoza, who had criticized the governor for not mentioning Cristina Fernández de Kirchner during his speech to the Legislature. Tomorrow, March 14, the PJ of Buenos Aires province will hold its internal elections with a unified list that will feature Governor Axel Kicillof as the party's president. Kicillof will replace Máximo Kirchner in the top PJ role following negotiations between them, at a time when the long leadership of former President Cristina Kirchner, who is under house arrest, is showing signs of exhaustion as President Javier Milei seeks re-election. 'I am very happy. A new stage is coming, which is an imperative,' Kicillof said.
